Fashion Photographer Brian Duffy Helped London Swing

Fashion photographer Brian Duffy, who died on this day in 2010, abandoned his career—and fame and fortune—in 1979 for a life of obscurity. But for nearly 20 years he, along with friends David Bailey and Terence Donovan, helped London swing. The three men were coined the “Black Trinity” photographers, and together they documented the fresh, kicky, kooky world of fashion, music and sex through the 1960s and 70s, shooting models, musicians and celebrities in what have become some of that era’s most iconic images. At some point along the wild ride, Duffy became a bit of a…

The King of Pop Throws Down the Rhinestone Gauntlet

Before Bieber’s bangs, Kurt’s plaid or Madonna’s bra, music’s greatest style statement was Michael Jackson’s single, sparkling glove. On this day in 1983, Jackson introduced his one-glove look (and a little dance move called the Moonwalk) while performing on “Motown 25,” a television special airing on NBC. Jackson had only agreed to take part in a Jackson 5 reunion for the program if he could also perform a solo of “Billie Jean,” the second single from his Thriller album that was currently enjoying its seventh week at number one on the pop charts. Jackson performed a…

Watch Out, World, Here Comes Diane von Furstenberg

Before the ubiquitous wrap dress, before the CFDA lifetime achievement award and the multi-million dollar luxury brand, Diane von Furstenberg was just a newbie designer making sales calls from her living room. OK, she wasn’t just any newbie designer, she was Princess Diane von Furstenberg through her marriage to German Prince Egon von Furstenberg in 1969. The 23-year-old Belgian and her husband had recently moved to New York City, had a baby and quickly became a fixture in the society pages, thanks to her good looks and great fashion sense. But von Furstenberg wasn’t one to…

The Royal Wedding: A Movie Star Becomes a Princess

Everyone knows the fairy tale about a girl swept away by a handsome prince. On this day in 1956, the bar was raised even higher when beloved, beautiful actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in what was dubbed “The Wedding of the Century.” As with another certain royal wedding, the media hype had been unrelenting since the couple announced their engagement a few months earlier. The fervor was fueled by the announcement that MGM’s Academy Award–winning costume designer Helen Rose would design the wedding dress. It didn’t help matters that Rose remained tight-lipped about Kelly’s…

Democracy Monument The majesty and grandeur of Rattanakosin’s temples, palaces and pavilions, which date back to the beginning of the Chakri Dynasty and the foundation of the new capital, rarely disappoint. For those seeking an initiation into Thailand’s unique culture and history, a visit here is a must. Bangkok’s longest boulevard, Rachadamnoen Avenue, is the scene of royal pomp and ceremony during times of celebration, mass-protest and demonstration during upheaval.

It links the Houses of Parliament at the north end, and leads to the Grand Palace at the other. Other significant sights include Makahan Fort, the Temple of the Golden Mount – a glittering 59-metre high chedi on a man-made hill – and Wat Sutat. The latter is one of the city’s oldest temples and site of the Great Swing, where young men used to ride perilously high in an attempt to grab a bag of silver coins – until the King banned it back in 1932 on account of the many deaths it caused. The striking-looking Democracy Monument , built in 1932 to commemorate the peaceful transition from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy, is also on Rachadamnoen.

Khao San Road Attractions

There are no historical sights to speak of on Khao San Road. That said, its location in the Old City (Rattanakosin) makes it an ideal base from which to explore the city’s classic attractions. That’s not to say there’s nothing to look at or admire. On the contrary, being a hub of unwashed humanity means Khao San Road is the perfect place to do some people watching, and only minutes walk away lies the distinctive bohemian atmosphere of Phra Arthit Road.

Bangkok Chinatown There are many things to see in Chinatown and the whole experience is impressive. The best way to explore the area is to pick a starting point and stick to a plan. Thanong Yaowarat and Thanong Charoen Krung are the main arteries of Chinatown, offering the biggest variety of eateries and shopping choices.
With about 14% of the buildings in the district designated as historical landmarks, Chinatown is home to many fine examples of the architecture of Bangkok’s early years. A good example is the Tang To Gung gold shop on Sampeng Lane, around Mangkon Road.

We recommend that you wander on down the claustrophobic soi’s where the smell of fried food and leather reveal a distinct scent, before trailing across a temple or market. The area is as such, that it will leave you feeling like you have been transported back in time.

Grand Palace Hall

Royal Reception Halls

Nowadays its impressive interior is used for important ceremonial occasions like coronations. It also contains the antique throne, used before the Western style one presently in use. Visitors are allowed inside the spacious European style reception room or Grand Palace Hall (Chakri Maha Prasat). Then there’s the impressive Dusit Hall, rated as perhaps the finest architectural building in this style, and a museum that has information on the restoration of the Grand Palace, scale models and numerous Buddha images.

Open: Daily 08:30 – 15:30
Location: Na Phra Lan Road, Old City (Rattanakosin)
Tickets: Tickets sold from 8:30 – 15:30 and cost 200 baht. One ticket includes entry to Vimanmek Palace and Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall.

If there is one must-see sight that no visit to Bangkok would be complete without, it’s the dazzling, spectacular Grand Palace, undoubtedly the city’s most famous landmark. Built in 1782 – and for 150 years the home of the Thai King, the Royal court and the administrative seat of government – the Grand Palace of Bangkok is a grand old dame indeed, that continues to have visitors in awe with its beautiful architecture and intricate detail, all of which is a proud salute to the creativity and craftsmanship of Thai people. Within its walls were also the Thai war ministry, state departments, and even the mint. Today, the complex remains the spiritual heart of the Thai Kingdom.Within the palace complex are several impressive buildings including Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), which contains the small, very famous and greatly revered Emerald Buddha that dates back to the 14th century. The robes on the Buddha are changed with the seasons by HM The King of Thailand, and forms an important ritual in the Buddhist calendar. Thai Kings stopped living in the palace around the turn of the twentieth century, but the palace complex is still used to mark all kinds of other ceremonial and auspicious happenings.
